About selfexclusion.co.za

South Africa's dedicated self-exclusion platform. Built to make the statutory process accessible to everyone who needs it, at no cost to the applicant.

Why we exist

Self-exclusion is a legal right. We make it accessible.

The right to self-exclude from licensed gambling is enshrined in Section 14 of the National Gambling Act 7 of 2004. But the process of actually doing it has never been simple. Forms, queues, uncertainty, and a system that places the burden entirely on the person who needs help most.

selfexclusion.co.za was built to change that. We handle the entire statutory process electronically, at no cost to the applicant, completing and submitting your NGB Form 1/1 to the National Gambling Board on your behalf. Once submitted, responsibility for registering and enforcing your exclusion rests with the NGB and the relevant Provincial Gambling Boards.

We are not a counselling service. We are not affiliated with any gambling operator. We are a harm reduction organisation whose sole function on this platform is to ensure that your application is correctly completed and submitted to the National Gambling Board.

Prevention, not punishment

Self-exclusion as a protection tool

Self-exclusion is one of the most effective evidence-based tools available to someone managing gambling harm. Here is why it works.

It creates a physical barrier

Once registered, every licensed casino and gambling operator in South Africa is legally required to bar your entry. The barrier exists even on days when willpower does not.

It buys you time

The minimum exclusion period is 6 months. That time creates distance between the impulse and the action. Most people who use self-exclusion say the cooling period was critical to their recovery.

It is legally binding

This is not a voluntary pledge to yourself. It is a statutory registration under the National Gambling Act 7 of 2004. Operators who permit entry to an excluded person face criminal liability.

It is national

One application covers every licensed casino and gambling premises in South Africa. You do not need to apply separately to each venue or each province.

It is free

There is no cost to the applicant. The process is funded entirely by Free Me South Africa. You should never have to pay to protect yourself.

It works alongside support

Self-exclusion is most effective when combined with counselling or peer support. The Problem Gambling Counselling Line is free, confidential, and available 24/7 on 0800 006 008.
